The Caistor Roman Project

Artist's reconstruction of town

The Roman town of Venta Icenorum, which lies buried beneath quiet fields at Caistor St Edmund to the south of Norwich, is one of only three Roman regional capitals in the UK that is not overlain by modern settlement.

The Caistor Roman Project aims to understand the rise and fall of the Roman town and the relationship between the town and its surrounding area. The results of the research are intended to enhance the value of the site as a cultural and educational resource for the region.

The research project represents a collaboration between the University of Nottingham, the Norfolk Archaeological Trust, South Norfolk Council and Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service.

About Us

A new website for the project is currently under construction and will be going online in Summer 2012 at www.caistorromanproject.org

This website is run by Caistor Roman Project Ltd, a registered charity established to support community involvement in the research project and to disseminate information about the project to the wider public. The fieldwalking and excavation teams are staffed by enthusiastic volunteers supported by a wide range of experts.

We are always grateful for contributions, large or small, to help us continue this work.

The Project acknowledges the generous help of the Norfolk Archaeological Trust, the University of Nottingham, South Norfolk Council, South Norfolk Alliance, Norfolk Museums and Archaeology Service, the British Academy, the Foyle Foundation, May Gurney Ltd., A-Plant, the Roman Research Trust, the Society for the Promotion of Roman Studies, the John Jarrold Trust, and Mr Michael Salter.
